The San Francisco-based magazine, celebrating its 30th anniversary in August, also that month named senior editors Monika Bauerlein and Clara Jeffery as editors in chief, replacing Russ Rymer, who departed in July. Cheers The California Supreme Court ruled this week that Catholic Charities of Sacramento must offer health care coverage that includes contraception for its workers, despite objections based on religious beliefs raised by the organization. The court ruled 6-1 in favor of applying the California Contraceptive Equity Act that requires California businesses to cover contraception within their healthcare plans, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. This was the third attempt Catholic Charities of Sacramento has made in three years to gain legal permission to deny its 138 workers coverage for contraception.

Cheers Two organizations have begun to quantify the number of rapes that occurred in the chaos that plagued New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in late August, National Public Radio reported Dec. 21. Although the official count of reported rapes remains at four cases, NPR quoted advocates who say a fuller picture is emerging of the level of violent crimes that actually occurred. Judy Benitez of the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault, a coalition of rape crisis centers in Hammond, La., says her group joined forces with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in Enola, Penn., six weeks ago by launching a Web site to collect rape reports.
